NICASIO SCHOOL AND ALL MARIN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS WILL BE CLOSED FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13TH

From: Mary Jane Burke, Marin County Superintendent of Schools

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Marin County Public Schools Close Due to Staffing Impact from Regional Wildfires

Marin County school districts have decided to close schools on Friday, October 13 as a result of a variety of challenges related to the wildfires regionally.

More than 1,000 Marin school employees live in the northern counties affected by the wild fires. We know that our community resources are being stretched including the ability of staff to report to work as well as the emotional stress on people impacted by the fires directly or indirectly.

"We have been in close contact with our districts and have considered a variety of options in the best interest of our students and staff," said Mary Jane Burke, Marin County Superintendent of Schools, "We think it is very important that the school districts countywide provide a consistent message and we feel that we need to support our staff, families and community as a whole. Our hearts go out to the families who are facing these devastating circumstances."

School related sports activities countywide have been canceled through the weekend as a result of poor air quality. Advice from the Marin County Public Health Officer is for people to remain indoors with limited physical exertion.

Several school sites throughout the county have been identified and are prepared to serve as evacuation shelters tomorrow and potentially into the future if needed.

College of Marin and Dominican University of California will also be closed on Friday.

Schools will plan to return to normal operations on Monday.

NICASIO SCHOOL PARENTS: PLEASE NOTE that we will activate our new Emergency Communication System this afternoon with notification about TOMORROW’s (Friday October 13th) SCHOOL CLOSURE. Due to Professional Development Day on Monday, classes will not resume until TUESDAY, October 17th.

Welcome to Nicasio School/District

Nicasio School District Boundaries: Map | Descriptions

Nicasio School serves approximately 50-60 students in grades TK-8. Students learn in multi-grade classrooms with highly skilled teachers and support staff who prepare them for transition to high school and life outside of Nicasio. While many graduating 8th graders attend Sir Francis Drake High School in San Anselmo, many others attend private high schools in Marin County and San Francisco.

Nestled in the heart of Marin County, California, Nicasio School belongs to one of the few remaining single-school public school districts in Marin. The district itself was established in 1866 with the first Nicasio schoolhouse constructed in 1867.

Nicasio School has changed dramatically since the late 1800s. Thanks to voters supporting a 2.4 million dollar school bond in 1999, today's campus is comprised of modern, state-of-the-art facilities.

In addition to large classrooms, students at Nicasio School have access to the school's library, up-to-date technology, art room and multi-purpose room equipped with a full kitchen. Having the advantage of  a rural environment, students also enjoy working in their own organic garden with support from their teachers along with parent and community volunteers.
